One of the many things I love about our trips to Vermont is that one way or another, they often have a literary flavor to them. Along with artisanal cheeses, pocket-sized, puckish breweries, and beautiful crafts, Vermonters seem to love books and writing. Maybe it’s those long winter nights, but maybe not. Maybe the state just attracts people who relish words as much as a good meal and a lovely sunset.

Relaxing in the lovely and serene living room of the inn where we’re staying, I made myself a cup of lemon tea and settled in to browse through a couple of Vermont magazines. No sooner did I pick up a copy of Vermont Magazine than I saw a gracefully scripted headline in red type that said “Celebrating Writers in Vermont” and a multicolored quill which made my heart sing. A couple of paragraphs went on to announce the creation of the “Vermont Writers’ Prize” — a new literary contest.

According to the description, “the focus of the entry must be Vermont — the People, the Place, its History or its Values.”Entries can take many forms: an essay, short story, play or poem of 1500 words or less. The winner will receive a $1,500 prize and “the honor of having their piece published in Vermont Magazine.”

The idea of a state celebrating writers really captures my fancy. I’m sure there are other state contests like this — I hope so! — because seeing this note reminded me how important it is to find places that value our role as storytellers. Write on!
