“Wishing. Wanting. Waiting. World Champions.”
An ad for the Chicago Cubs
It’s over: The 108-year drought is over. That’s how long it’s been since the Chicago Cubs have won a World Series. Tomight, they’re world champions. Their victory didn’t come easily: The last time the Cubs won a world series was in 1908 and the Cleveland Indians haven’t won one since 1948. Both teams were hungry and both played their hearts out. At one point, the Indians were losing 5 to 1, but they battled their way back to a tie and the game went into a 10th inning.
In the end, the Cubs triumphed. Afterwards, the players, managers, and sports experts had a lot to say about the team’s grit and resilience. A few inspiring highlights:
“We never quit. The boys believed. And we won.” Anthony Rizzo, Cubs player
“Every time we had to do something, we executed.” Jason Heywood, Cubs player
“We’ve been through it all. To be a part of this — I don’t have words to tell you how I feel.
We got it done. We got it done. It doesn’t matter how.” Jon Lester, Cubs player
“A lot of ups and downs. What a group of resilient winners! These guys never quit. I’m so proud of this group. The city of Chicago deserves it.” David Ross, Cubs catcher
“It’s unbelievable. I can’t even put it into words. What this team has battled — the ups and downs. This team supports each other and picks each other up. Ben Zobrist, series MVP
“What a testament to our players — what grit. We don’t need a plane to fly home. It’s been a century in the making and no one deserves it more than the Cubs fans. Your fans waited 108 years and you delivered in style. The wait is over.” Theo Epstein, Cubs President
“It was a tough game. This group never quits. We never quit. It’s the the attitude, the culture we’ve created. John Madden, Cubs manager
“The grit they showed… They showed the heart of a champion.” Alex Rodriguez
“The team was hungry. The hunger and desire they showed this year — that’s why they’re world champions.” Sports commentator
Grit. Battling ups and downs. Never quitting. Being resilient winners. Showing hunger and desire. Let’s bring all of this to the page, just as the Cubs brought it to the playing field — and write on.
