“The greatest achievements were at first and for a time dreams. The oak sleeps in the acorn.” James Allen, writer
How hopeful a thought this is! And how inspiring it is to remind ourselves that every accomplishment starts as a dream.
While we love to admire the mighty oaks we come across, arms outstretched to the sky and roots grown deep, we often forget the humble acorn. Yet as James says so well, “the oak sleeps within the acorn.”
Let’s consider for a moment, how we might apply this to our writing:
We may dream of seeing our stories published or finishing the final revision of a novel. We may dream of sharing a life-changing story or making a difference through the words and thoughts we share with our cherished readers, whoever they are.
Whatever our dreams may be, they will sleep silently within us unless we plant acorns—small, modest actions that, over time, will take root and grow into oaks.
What acorns can we plant, now—today?
We plant an acorn when we dust off our dreams and give time to them, letting them reveal themselves to us and take shape in our minds.
We plant an acorn when we visualize what realizing a dream will feel like—when we inspirit our dreams through the awesome power of our imaginations.
We plant an acorn when we give priority to our dreams, making them an active part of our writing life—a goal on our writer’s journey.
We plant an acorn when we take one action every day, however humble, to help our dream take root and then water it by taking another action and another.
What acorn can you plant today? What simple action can you take that moves you toward your dream?
Plant one acorn every day, and you’ll have a whole field of them. And out of a few that take deep root, you’ll soon find your dreams growing.
