A fierce advocate of direct, unfussy language, Toby Stein, who passed away recently, was an editor, author, and poetry lover. She was also a cherished KWD reader and whenever she let me know she really enjoyed a post, I felt like I’d won the Pulitzer! In honor of Toby, I am sharing some practical writing tips she passed on to KWD readers:

“Use the right word everywhere — not its second cousin” – this is one of Mark Twain’s rules of writing and Toby heartily endorsed it! Write on!
