Little Acts

“Do not wait for great strength before setting out, for immobility will weaken you further. Do not wait to see clearly before starting: one has to walk toward the light.

“When you take the first step, accomplish that tiny little act, the necessity of which may be apparent only to you, you will be astonished to feel that the effort, rather than exhausting your strength, has doubled it—and that you already see more clearly what you have to do next.” Phillips Vernier

What wisdom there is in these words! So often we hold back, waiting for the timing for something to be right, to feel that we’re better prepared, that we have more resources at our command. Delay does nothing but deplete us—rob us of the energy we need.

Let’s scan this gem more closely and see what we can learn from it:

Immobility weakens—It’s not taking action that tires us and makes us fatigued and dispirited. Action actually creates energy. When we move forward, our forward motion creates the fuel we need. Don’t wait for perfection! Don’t wait to get all your ducks in a row—start rowing!

Walk toward the light—We don’t need to see clearly—to know everything about it—to launch a new venture. In fact, that’s what makes a new venture an adventure—we’re not exactly sure what’s going to happen. So we can be in a state of poised anticipation—alert to opportunities and byways that might prove productive. If we walk toward the light, we’ll be heading in the right direction.

Take the first step—“Only begin!” someone once said to me. How powerful those words are! There is strength and purpose in beginning and that can be so sustaining! Once we commit, truly commit, the Universe takes notice and send us what we need. Over and Over, I’ve found this to be true in life and on my own writing journey.

Effort will double your strength—That first step, that tiny little act, once achieved will energize you rather than deplete you. Effort aimed at a worthy goal—one you really care about—gives you the strength to keep going and the next step will be revealed.

Action creates energy—that’s the bottom line—the real message here.

How encouraging all this is, isn’t it? Taking that first step isn’t so hard, is it? And when we do, when we make the effort, we are energized. And now, enlivened and inspired, let’s all write on!
