“True creativity is characterized by a succession of acts each dependent on the one before and suggesting the one after.” Edwin H. Land
“Just do the next right thing.” Dr. Rob Gilbert
I love the way these two quotes simplify our path and I love the way that Dr. Gilbert* captures the first quote in just six words. Masterful!
“Just do the next right thing.”
What a gift these words are! And how freeing, how liberating this is!
So often, we look at what we want to accomplish as a big mountain we have to climb. We look up from the earth below and it just seems so high, so mighty, so formidable. We lace up our boots and begin our trek upward, but at some point we lose steam. We may head back down and give up totally or we may push on, but, feeling disheartened, we give only half our energy to the task ahead.
What if we just forgot about the mountain and looked at the path right in front of us, right ahead of where we are right now. What if we just took the next right step and then the next and then the next? Sure, it might take us quite some time to great where we want to go, but so what? As long as we’re moving in the right direction, who cares?
The wonderful singer John Legend once said, “You can’t rush creativity.” How true this is! How true I’ve found this to be in my own life and work. Slow and steady wins the race and that’s OK. It really is.
So instead of being mountain climbers, let’s be path finders. Let’s “just do the next right thing”—let’s just take the next best step and then another and then another. Let’s not worry about how much time it takes, or who’ve racing ahead of us, or where we hoping to get to. Let’s just enjoy the journey.
I know what my “next right thing” is and I’m going to do it today. How about you? Let’s keep stepping together as we all write on!
