Bold Advice

“This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often. If you don’t like something, change it. If you don’t like your job, quit.”
Bonnie Jerbasi, Big Bold Business Advice

It’s always fun to attend book signings and hear authors talk about subjects they’re passionate about — and when you know some of the speakers, it’s even more satisfying. That’s why I popped in to my favorite local bookstore, Watchung Booksellers, to hear a panel of entrepreneurs share advice from their joint venture, a great new guide called Big Bold Business Advice from New Jersey Women Business Owners (www.BigBoldBusiness.com) published by Woodpecker Press. I know several of the authors and it was exciting to hear them share advice and talk about their book.

Donna Thompson, the force behind Woodpecker Press, is a woman on a mission. She loves publishing and marketing — and it shows! As she puts it: “Publishing is my passion, as is the case with so many others involved in this wonderful field. Thus, producing this book — the first in a series of Big Bold Business Books — is exhilarating and provides me with a deep sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with any great accomplishment. The smell of that new book right out of the box from the printer never gets old.”

I just love Donna’s enthusiasm for the printed word and the smell of a new book! Passion, exhilaration, satisfaction, pride, accomplishment: the words Donna uses to capture how she feels about sending a new book out into the world are the same ones that most newly minted authors I know use to describe how they feel about being published.

Hearing my friend Bonnie Jerbasi share her advice about bringing balance to running her small business Hose Call Attorneys (www.HouseCallAttorneys.com) reminded me again how valuable advice “from the trenches” is — and that’s exactly what’s captured in this new guide. Big Bold Business Advice features insights and expertise from 72 business owners. Now that’s a lot of woman power! How wonderful that there are now 72 more authors in the world. Write on!

It used to be the British way not to appear too keen, too enthusiastic; it was practically de rigeur. It’s changing now: in the 60s Beatlemaniacs screamed, nowadays every audience whoops and shrieks when their favourite act appears. However, I suspect that’s mere partisanship, while passion, exhilaration, satisfaction, pride, accomplishment, well they’re something deeper, dare I say more authentic.
