Stepping Out

When and if you feel ready to pitch your work with the goal of finding a traditional publisher, there are plenty of upcoming opportunities for meeting agents one on one at writers’ conferences. Some of these conferences have broad agendas aimed at writers in many different genres while others focus on a single genre, from mystery to romance. To give you some idea of what’s out there and the agents attending various events, I’ve listed a sampling from Chuck Sambuchino’s blog for the 2014 Guide to Literary Agents.

Checking out an agent’s bio and agency Web site will give you a good idea of what his/her interests are and whether your project might have some appeal. As you scan this list, I hope you’ll find it encouraging: There are plenty of dedicated agents willing to meet with aspiring writers and offer advice. Whether you’re still in the revision stage as I am or just launching a new book, just knowing what’s out there can be motivating:

Clarksville Writers Conference, June 5-6, 2014, Clarksville, TN. Attending agents: Malaga Baldi (Baldi Agency); and Ken Sherman (Ken Sherman & Associates).
