“All Inventors”

“We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, guided each by a private chart of which there is no duplicate. The world is all gates, all opportunities.”

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love Ralph, don’t you? When you need a boost, you can always turn to him for an energizing shot of authorly adrenalin. He has the gift of inspiration! Before we move forward on our writerly voyage today, let’s explore his words and how they apply to us:

“We are all inventors” – How true this is for everyone who lives and breathes, and yet, it’s doubly true for us as creatives and wordsmiths, isn’t it? We are inventors, conjurers, those who make believe. We can travel anywhere and do anything with the stroke of a pen, the dash of a pencil, the click of our computer keys. What marvelous power we have at our fingertips – who is more fortunate than we are?

We’re “each sailing on a voyage of discovery” – how true, once again – and how fortunate also. As so many writers have said so well, we write to find out who we are and to investigate the human condition and then to come back and share what we’ve learned. Every day, we sail out on the printed page and discover new ideas, new thoughts, new ways of expressing what we feel and yearn to share. What a gift!

We are “guided each by a private chart of which there is no duplicate” – What a lovely way to say that each of us is unique and that each of us has a story to tell or create that only we can give life to and shape and share. How wonderful to know that we each have a “private chart” – a map to guide us that’s all our own.

“The world is all gates, all opportunities” – Love this image, don’t you? In a few words, it conveys to us that the world is waiting to be discovered by us and that it’s open for our exploration. There may be gatekeepers here and there we have to deal with, but there are plenty of inviting gates and plenty of opportunities to explore with joyous abandon.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” – what a liberating idea! We have everything we need already inside us – everything we need to succeed. We only have to decide who we want to be and set sail with our charts.

Bravo, Ralph! Let’s take his words of wisdom to heart as we all write on!
