“Storyteller” Contest

I know, I know — Amazon garners mixed reviews on many fronts. This Amazon Storyteller appears to be an attempt on the part of Amazon to expand its roster of books. That said, if you plan to self-publish a book soon, this is an opportunity you should know about.  The contest offers a grand prize of around $25,000. The deadline to enter:  August 31st, 2020.

Here’s an overview of the contest rules: Authors submitting to the contest publish their entry via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), as both an ebook and a print book. When publishing on Kindle, authors must add the keyword “StorytellerUK2020” in the keywords metadata field. As part of the entry process, authors are required to enroll in Amazon’s “KDP Select” program, which requires that your book be exclusively available from Amazon for 90 days. Amazon has streamlined its processes, so it’s easy to publish both ebook and print versions, including cover design, layout, etc.

It’s important to note here that self-publishing with Kindle Direct Publishing will make the book “published” in the eyes of publishers — and this will make it very challenging to publish with traditional publishers.

Entries do not need to be full-length manuscripts. An entry must be at least 24 pages for the print edition. Judging will take place in stages, with the first round being determined by reader reviews, as well as expert judges. The final winner will be determined by a panel of judges (to be announced).

Writers from all over the world are welcome to enter the contest.

If you are already planning on self-publishing with Amazon, this is a great opportunity. If not, then entering this contest may not be worth the restrictions, especially if you are aiming for a traditional publishing company at some point.
