“Books are keys to wisdom’s treasure;
Books are gates to lands of pleasure;
Books are paths that upward lead;
Books are friends. Come, let us read.”
I came across this lovely inscription by Emilie Poulsson, created for a Children’s Reading Room in Hopkington, Massachusetts, in a book I recently rediscovered. It reminded me just how wonderful it is to ponder books and all they mean to us. More words of praise:
“Books are the children of the brain.” Jonathan Swift
“There is something about a book which fits the eye, the hand — and the mind: It has achieved a perfect form, which cannot be transcended.” Jacques Barzun
“Wear the old coat and buy the new book.” Austin Phelps
“It had been startling and disappointing to me to find out that story books had been written by people, that books were not natural wonders, coming up of themselves like grass.” Eudora Welty
“The true University of these days is a collection of books.” Thomas Carlyle
“People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading.” Logan Pearsall Smith
“When you sell a man a book you don’t sell him just 12 ounces of paper and ink and glue — you sell him a whole new life.” Christopher Morley
“The profession of book-writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, reliable business.” John Steinbeck
Inspired and enlivened by the brave hearted book, let’s all write on!
