“Many fiction writers used to ‘make things up’ n their heads when they were children, either for their own amusement or to entertain other children. Storytelling is an ancient art, possibly ingrained in a species equipped with an over-developed cerebral cortex trying to cope with reality as best it can. But not all humans grow up to be storytellers for others.
“Perhaps you are, or you know, someone who can imagine such elaborate, structured, vivid fantasies that you wonder why anyone would bother writing them down in cold prose when by shutting your eyes you can see the whole thing in your head like a movies. Why bother when words will never convey the glorious inner reality? Why do people write?
“Because writers write. Because the act of imagining is somehow completed when put into words and shared with others.”
From “How to Enjoy Writing, Janet and Isaac Asimov
Love that last line: “…the act of imagining is somehow completed when put into words and shared with others.”
How true this is, isn’t it? Our acts of imagination take on meaning and a kind of wholeness when they are shared.
When we share our worlds with readers, they become more real.
When we turn words into pictures, they leap from our head to the page.
When we bring our readers along with us, we both take a journey.
When we let our readers into our worlds we begin to know each other.
What a gift it is to create worlds through fiction or to deepen our understanding of the world around us through nonfiction! Let’s make those worlds bubble and sparkle and shine as we all write on!
