Bold Believers

Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside them was superior to circumstance.”      Bruce Barton

Daring believers — they’re a rare breed, aren’t they? They are the ones who stay up late working because they’ve got an idea that just won’t let them go, no matter how crazy everyone around them thinks it is. Like the Apple boys. They’re the ones who stand at the ballet barre, practicing and practicing, even though some instructor has told them they don’t have the body to be a ballerina. Like Misty Copeland. And they’re the ones who keep on drawing cartoon characters until, out of their pen, a little mouse pops out — even though someone on a newspaper told them they “weren’t creative enough” to be a cartoonist. Like Walt Disney.

Why are daring believers so rare — and why do we admire them so much? To my mind, it’s because they don’t bow to circumstances, but instead bend them until they support their visions instead of crushing them. But this takes enormous stamina and fortitude. You have to be willing to dig deep and go far along a path that people around you may believe is a dangerous detour or even a dead end.

If you spend a little time in a coffee shop or walking down the street as people chat on cell phones, it doesn’t take long to realize that most of the conversations swirling around you are about problems people are having and circumstances that are threatening them in some way. And all too often, the gist of the conversation seems to be about what they or someone they know shouldn’t or can’t do.

Bold believers don’t let circumstances — what’s happening around them — affect their attitude and effort — what’s happening inside them. As L.M. Montgomery, the creator of Anne of Green Gables once said, “I went looking for my dreams outside of myself and discovered, it’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it.”

So let’s be bold believers and circumstance slayers — and write on!
