Word Magic

When I used the word “jumpstart” in my last blog, it inspired me to check out some synonyms for this energetic word, which means to “rouse or to goad into action of feeling something.” Here are a few:

Inspire

There are many other variations on “jumpstart” I might have added here. One source boasts more than 120 synonyms! As you scan my list, I’m sure you’ll be struck, like me, by the shades of meaning each of these words convey. What a gift to us as writers! Reaching for just the right word can be so enlivening and emotionally satisfying. As we pen our prose or poetry, let’s not forget the easiest tools to reach for are often the richest: the dictionary and thesaurus. Write on!
