Passionate Prevailers

Great dancers are not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion.” Martha Graham

“If you hear a voice within you saying, ‘You are not a painter,’ then by all means paint…and that voice will be silenced.” Vincent Van Gogh

Martha Graham and Vincent Van Gogh—perfect together! To my mind, their words of wisdom belong together, because I believe they are essentially saying the same thing: Passion is the touchstone of success.

Technique is important, it’s true. But without passion, it’s like a heart empty of emotion. And that inner critic Van Gogh speaks of will only be silenced when we give our passion free reign—when we refuse to listen and we do exactly what that voice tells us we can’t.

Passion sets us on fire! It burns through resistance. It burns through obstacles. It burns through all the “can’ts” and “shoulds” that litter our path. When we tap into our passion, we fuel our commitment. And when we commit with a whole heart to the work we want to do, then,k in my experience, the Universe supports us.

Sometimes our passion burns low and it needs to be rekindled. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves why we began a project that seems to be taxing our strength and our enthusiasm. Sometimes we need to turn to friends for a boost, so they can remind us of our gifts. Sometimes we need to sojourn a while in the world and let its rich variety refill our well of inspiration.

Whatever it takes to fuel your passion—make it happen! And when you marry passion to perseverance, what mountain can’t you climb? So let’s be passionate prevailers as we all write on!
