Hard Strengthens

The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting. The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.Marcus Aurelius

Wow, what stands in the way becomes the way.” An eye-opening statement, isn’t it? The very obstacles standing in the way hold the key to our moving forward. Obstacles actually spur action. What an idea!

Marcus died in 180 AD and a lot has happened since then. But some things haven’t changed. We all encounter obstacles. We all struggle to find a way forward when we do.

What’s the message Marcus is trying to give us?

Hard is good. Hard makes us stronger. “Obstacles strengthen us”—this is a mantra my friend and elite athlete Terrie Wurzbacher has shared because it’s helped her on her own path.

Hard means we’ve been given a task that’s worth fighting for. If things come too easily, there’s no movement, no progress. When things come hard, it means we are engaged in a worthy effort.

Hard work makes things better, including ourselves. When we do the hard work in front of us, we push ourselves. We grow. We change.

Hard shows us the road to take. Often, though we hate to admit it, hard points out the path we should be traveling. It shows us where we should put our time, attention, and effort.

Sometime soon, something hard is going to come your way. When it does, take a deep breath and take a moment to be grateful. Somewhere inside that daunting task is a gift for you. Unwrap it and write on!
