From A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fears is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, Talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people;e won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone, and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
I love this so much, I have a version of it on a wall in my office. It reminds me to THINK BIG and PLAY BIG!!!!
How liberating these words are! If we truly take them to heart and make them part of us, what couldn’t we do? The sky’s the limit! Whatever inner force you believe in—God, Creativity, Energy—these words urge us to be our best selves. We all know there’s some inner drive impelling us forward and when we get out of the way, it sweeps us onward toward a goal, a dream, a mission, that matters to us.
Without this inner drive, we wouldn’t push ourselves to improve our craft. We’d be content with our first draft, a paragraph that collapses on the page, words that don’t really say what we want them to. Without that inner drive, we’d just slap words down and let them be, instead of polishing them until they sing and dance on the page.
But something urges us on—some mysterious force tells us we can do better, that we have to do better—that a mediocre, half-hearted effort isn’t worthy of our skills or the readers we hope to attract.
Let’s embrace that mystery—that light inside us! As Marianne says so well, when we shine, we free others to shine as well. We become beacons of inspiration. And we chase the darkness away. So let’s all shine brightly today—and every day! Write on!
