“…every rule in the book can be broken, except one—be who you are and become all you were meant to be…” Sydney Harris, American journalist
I love these words and the can-do energy behind them! In a world that seems full of rules—no adverbs, don’t start a story describing the weather—our friend Sydney gives us a “Get Out of Jail” free pass! He gives us permission to ignore all these rules—except that all-important one: be yourself!
Why a liberating thought! Just focus on being yourself and becoming “all you were meant to be” and everything else will sort itself out. So how do we make this liberating rule our own? A few thoughts:
Let’s write what we want to write: To be ourselves, we need to express ourselves with total honesty, innocently and confidently. When we set all other considerations aside—getting published, winning praise, writing for a specific market—and write from the heart, then we’re being true to ourselves. When we believe in our work and our ability to bring it to life, we’re on the road to becoming all we were meant to be.
Let’s turn away from naysayers: On the road to becoming ourselves we often encounter people who are less than enthusiastic about our quest. They may feel that we don’t have the skill or drive needed. Or that we are missing the mark market-wise. Or that we are simply deluded. Whatever motivates them, they are not in our cheering section. If they have useful advice, let’s make use of it. If not, let’s ignore them.
Let’s find our cheerleaders: Somewhere out there, there are people ready and willing to believe in us. They are our support system, our cheerleaders, our sounding boards. Let’s gather them and cherish them. Let’s help them on the way to becoming themselves just as they’d re helping us. A virtuous circle is always powerful!
Let’s keep our eye on the prize: Let’s keep our one rule ever before us. As we write, from time to time, let’s ask ourselves: Is what I’m writing true to who I am? Is it helping me grow and improve?
So let’s apply Sydney’s wise advisce. Let’s be rule takers and embrace this one heart-opening rule! “…be who you are and become all you were meant to be.” We can get there from wherever we are. Write on!
