Having Fun

The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play.” Arnold Toynbee

Right now, I’m sitting in a cute cafe where it’s cool, having a latte and apple turnover and pondering our friend Arnold’s words. Right now, I’m thinking that it’s fun to be here as people chatter quietly and gather my thoughts and share them. I’m also thinking that it isn’t always easy to “blur the line between work and play.”

Sometimes, we just have to hunker down and see a job through. Sometimes we have to fight through the resistance to writing. This takes courage and discipline—and faith! But here’s one thing I’ve learned about working hard to make something happen—it’s supremely fulfilling. And yes, it can also be fun!

To me, writing is often a form of play—it stretches and inspires me to be curious and to “noodle” around ideas and see where they take me. And working hard is also a kind of play. Here’s why I think this way:

When we’re playful, we take an airy, expansive approach to our work. Instead of being angsty and stressed and contracted, we’re open. That lets our ideas flow more easily.

When we’re playful, we invite the Universe to help us. When we show up for a writing session with an air of joyful expectation, I believe the Muses take notice. They appreciate our appreciation! And because of this, they may send little gifts our way—a great idea, a new character—something that inspirits and encourages us to keep going.

When we’re playful, we can turn a thorny writing situation into a chance to experiment, to think outside the box, to get a little crazy. And sometimes, just outside of crazy lies the Land of Possibilities!

When we’re playful, we’re more likely to get into a state of flow—that magical zone where time and space disappear and we are on fire!

So what’s your take on blurring the line between work and play? Is there a way to merge them so we can be working hard and playful at the same time? I’d love to hear what you think as we all write on!
