True Selves

“. . . whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.” Tina Turner

Love this bold, brassy quote! Tina certainly knew a thing or two about getting rid of what was bringing her down. Once she broke off with her husband Ike and their troubled marriage, she began to soar!

We’ve all got baggage. We’re all challenged by whatever is bringing us down. Here’s a question worth asking: What are some of the things you need to get rid so that “your true creativity, your true self” can shine?

An even better question: What would your work look life if you truly unleashed your creativity—if you didn’t hold back, if you went all out all the time? Here’s what I think might happen to us all:

We’d be more original—even quirky and dare I say it, weird. We’d come up with unexpected, offbeat ideas. Some of these might be duds, but we’d also find diamonds. What a thrill!

We’d be in a dynamic state of expectancy. We’d be excited and even enthralled by the creativity that floats down to us through the ether. We’d never know what to expect from ourselves and that’s freeing!

We’d fail more, but we’d be OK with it. As my great coach and mentor Dr. Rob Gilbert* says, “Winners lose more than losers lose.” That’s because losers play it safe and winners are out there swinging. But once we know that as Rob says, “There’s no winning and losing, there’s only winning and learning,” we’d be OK with failing because we’d be failing forward. What a relief to dump the whole “fear of failure” baggage!

We’d bring more fun and joy to our work. When our true creativity, our true self shines, our lives become more fun and more joyful. We are tapping into our true potential and that fuels or enthusiasm. And, as I read recently, enthusiasm is “mental sunshine.”

We’ve all got baggage we need to dump—and that’s not easy. But consider the rewards of letting go of whatever is holding you back: you’ll unleash our true creativity and become your true self. What a gift to yourself as a writer—and to the world. Write on!
