“When you follow your bliss…doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” Joseph Campbell, mythologist
Beaming ourselves into the realm of bliss—what a fabulous way to start the week! And to boost our spirits even more, here’s the awesome definition of “Bliss” kindly supplied by my ever-handy Century Dictionary:
“Blitheness; gladness; lightness of heart; supreme happiness or delight; blessedness; the joy of heaven; also, a cause of great joy or happiness.”
And for good measure, here’s a description of “blissful:” “Full of bliss; enjoying or conferring bliss; supremely joyful.”
Dare I add that the word “bliss” is followed by “blister”? Ah, the yin and yang of life!
Following our bliss being our theme, let’s explore a few of its meanings:
“Blitheness”—what a lovely word! Uplifting and airy, isn’t it? It always makes me think of that phrase, “blithe spirit” and of a bird soaring in the sky for the sheer fun of it. Can we bring an airy, carefree spirit to our work today?
“Lightness of heart”— When we bring lightheartedness to our work, it all goes more smoothly, doesn’t it? We are reminded of what a gift it is to call writing our calling and lay our worldly burdens aside, so we can enter our writing chambers with a happy heart.
“Supreme happiness or delight”—Truly, “delight” is one of my favorite words! And just ponder for a moment, how inspiriting and encouraging is to our writing life when we bring “supreme happiness and delight” to the page. To me, pleasure on the page means pleasure for the reader. What a gift to exchange with each other!
“Blessedness”—Yes, how supremely blessed we are to share stories and wisdom and experience with the rest of the world!
“Joy of heaven”—By bringing together two such lovely words: “joy” and “heaven”—this dictionary phrase wins my vote! How encouraging to believe that when we follow our bliss and do the work we’re meant to do, we taste the “joy of heaven.”
As we write today, let’s keep that buoyant, bountiful word “bliss” ever present. Sometimes we forget to follow our bliss—we focus more on our burdens than on the joy and happiness that writing can give us. Yet, even when we go astray, Bliss is always waiting for us, quietly and confidently inviting us to come out and play!
Write on!
