Superb Meteors

“I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” Jack London

What a peppy, uplifting message this is, winging to us across time and space! Jack was juiced up and he encourages us to be as energized by life as he is! To use our time well and with vigor. Let’s do it!

Let’s be filled with purpose and intention: Let’s not be wispy-washy about our work and what we want to accomplish. Let’s set our goals high so they exceed our grasp and then go after them!

Let’s fight through any obstacles: Let’s not fold our tents and slink away when we hit a pot hole on our writing road! A major mixed metaphor, but you get the idea—let’s not be overwhelmed by obstacles. When they crop up, let’s do what Dr. Terrie Wurzbacher does when she’s on her epic walks through Tennessee. Let’s summon up inspiriting mantras: “Everything always works out for me,” or “Obstacles strengthen me.”

Let’s call in the troops: If we need help, let’s ask for it! We may write alone, but we don’t have to remain alone. Yes, for most of us, writing is a solitary endeavor—it happens between us and the page. But sometimes we need to bounce ideas off someone, we may need help gathering information, or moving from our writing desk out into the world. When we need help to fan our magnificent glow, let’s ask for it!

Let’s go all out: As Dr. Rob Gilbert* often says, the biggest question in life is, “Are you going to go all out or hold back?” When we hold back, we censor ourselves, we limit ourselves by playing it safe. When we go all out, we summon every ounce of creativity and energy to make something happen—and that’s when the Universe steps in and supports us. So let’s not be timid! Let’s be bold, let’s glow—and go for it!

OK, Superb Meteors—start your engines and let’s all write on!
