“A Quickening”

“There is a vitality, a life force, a energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.

“And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.” Martha Graham

“Life energy flows when we create, or when we help another person’s creativity flower by encouraging them in some way.

“Think of the sense of joy and satisfaction that one can derive from the simple act of planting flowers, cooking a meal, writing a poem, solving a problem, painting a picture, dressing with flair, or doing your job to the best of your abilities.”

“Creativity brings us to life, and by using our creativity we help bring the world into being.” Dr. Joan Borysenko, psychologist and writer

What lovely comments on creativity! And what a gift to be gently reminded of all the joys and pleasures that flow from its ever-renewing wellspring within us!

“Quicken” — I love this word and its meaning—“to stimulate, excite, inspire.” We’ve all experienced this feeling from time to time, haven’t we? That surge of energy, that flash of insight, that spark of story which sets us off on a journey of discovery.

These moments of quickening can arise from the smallest source of fulfillment and satisfaction: Finding just the write (love this mind mistake!) word to give a sentence flair and snap. Figuring out a thorny plot problem that bedeviled you. Finally putting the finishing touches on a story for submission. Feeling fulfilled by a satisfying day’s work.

All these moments quicken us: They make us feel alive and alert—and blessed. Because what is more enlivening than using or creativity—or more aptly, letting it use us? Letting it flow out into the world?

“Creativity brings us to life, and by using our creativity we help bring the world into being.” What a gift to cherish as we all write on!
