Dear Cherished KWD Readers,
It all began with a book.
Many years ago, I visited a used bookstore in upstate New York called, “Hope Farm.” There, lying face up on a pile of well-worn volumes was a biography, “Sojourner Truth, A self-Made Woman,” by Victoria Ortiz.
I can still see myself standing there thinking, “‘Sojourner Truth”—what a remarkable name and what an incredible woman! Wouldn’t it be amazing to bring her to life on the stage?”
And in that moment, she and I began a long journey together.
Sojourner lived a big life. After she was freed, she became a legendary activist. But the part of her story that really touched me was her fight to find her little boy Peter after he was illegally taken down South.
I knew this was a story I needed to tell. I joined a playwriting class, wrote a play about her, and had a few staged readings. Exciting!
Then I moved on to other projects. My play, now called “Dust of Egypt,” languished on my computer until recently, when a friend encouraged me to enter it in a festival. I spent weeks revising it and sent it out.
What a joy! My play has been selected by the NY Theater Festival for its 2022 season! It will be showcased for 3 days in November. Seeing my words come alive on stage will be a huge moment for me. I can’t wait!
The wonderful team helping me and I have to raise funds to get the show up and running. To make it happen, I need your help! I hope you’ll take a few moments to visit my Indiegogo site to find out more about the play and how you can support it: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/dust-of-egypt-play-at-the-ny-theater-festival#/
Seeing “Dust of Egypt” on stage will truly be a dream come true for me. We hope to bring the play to schools and colleges and other theaters so that more people can learn about Sojourner and her amazing story.
Thank you for letting me share this story with you as we all write on!
Wonderful, amazing achievement Karin. Sent a small donation from my daughter Lisa Kennedy and me. Honored to have been asked. Our very best to the whole production team and much love to the author of course.
Hi Pat,
Thank you and your daughter Lisa so much for your contribution! Your support and encouragement mean so much to me. I love and cherish my KDW family!
Write on,
Karin
