“My friends are my estate.” Emily Dickinson
Truly, the divine Emily captured the heart of friendship in these five words. Friends enrich our lives in so many ways. Bringing my play Dust of Egypt to the stage was a huge undertaking for me and I couldn’t have done it without the wonderful help and encouragement of my friends.
I’m sure your friends are a source of inspiration and strength for you in your writing life as well. That’s why I love this list of the ABC’s of friendship and wanted to share it:
Always be honest.
Be there when they need you.
Cheer them on.
Don’t look for their faults.
Every chance you get, call!
Forgive them.
Get together often.
Have faith in them.
Include them.
Just listen.
Know their dreams.
Love them unconditionally.
Make them feel special.
Never forget them.
Offer to help.
Praise them honestly.
Quietly disagree.
Rescue them often.
Say you’re sorry.
Talk frequently.
Use good judgment.
Wish them good luck!
X-ray yourself first.
Your word counts.
Zip your mouth when told a secret.
From When Words Matter Most by Robin Freedman Spizman.
To my mind, the craft of writing is also about the art of friendship. Friends inspire and motivate us, they nourish and sustain us. Let’s take a tip from Emily Dickinson and treasure our friends as we all write on!
