“You must learn, day by day, to broaden your horizon. The more things you love, the more things you are interested in, the more you enjoy, the more you are indignant about—the more you have left when anything happens.” Ethel Barrymore
“Stop every now and then. Just stop and enjoy. Take a deep breath. Relax and take in the abundance of life.” Anonymous
“Join with those who sing songs, tell stories, enjoy life…because happiness is contagious.” Paulo Coelho
All these wonderful words remind us that, as writers, we have the gifts of curiousity, observation, of noting things that others often pass by. Beyond this, we have the ability to share what we’ve learned with those around us and our readers. So let’s take heed of the wise souls who shared these wise words with us. Let’s take every chance we can to:
“Broaden our horizons”—To find new things to be interested in and to enjoy, and yes, to be indignant about. When we engage with life, life engages with us and our experiences become richer and deeper. This not only enlivens and nourishes our souls, it also allows us to bring more to the page and give more to our readers. They depend on us to see what they may not see; to share the mystery and magic of life.
“Just stop and enjoy”—It’s so important, isn’t it, to stop once in a while to stop and enjoy the world? Just yesterday, I took some time to do this. To listen to the song of a bird singing in a tree for the sheer joy of it. To see the buds of a lilac bush just about to burst into brilliant color and shed their fragrance. To lean against a tree trunk and let its calm, quiet strength pour into me. All of these moments enriched me. Taking time to enjoy the world’s beauty reminds us that it is worth saving.
“…sing songs, tell stories”—We are the myth preservers and meaning-makers of the world. We are the ones who take the tangled threads of life and weave them into stories that help us and our readers make sense of what’s happening around us and what happened before us. Without us, stories would fail and falter.
So let’s take every opportunity to learn and be curious, to stop and enjoy the abundance of life, and to tell the stories we are meant to tell. Write on!
