“Nancy Burke’s Death Cleaning and Other Units of Measure is a wide-ranging, moving work which focuses with great sensitivity on the intersection between the inner lives of ordinary people and their daily experiences. Told from multiple points of view—young, old, men and women—it deftly captures the long-held secrets, misunderstandings, and bonds, however fraught, that make up any relationship….For readers looking to dive into a rich exploration of the seasons of women’s and men’s lives, this is a book to treasure.” Rose lee Blooston, author of Trial by Family, an IBPA Gold Medal Winner

What amazing reviews! And how exciting and satisfying it is to see this hard-earned praise Nancy, my long-time critique partner and dear friend! Her new short-story collection, Death Cleaning and Other Units of Measure, is generating lots of buzz. Having seen many of the stories as they ripened over time, I feel especially happy to see just how amazingly she’s molded them into a compelling collection.

Family entanglements are fertile territory for Nancy and her stories navigate their emotional minefields with fascination and ease. Plunging into the lives of her characters, I somehow felt that she was watching them right along with me as the;y struggle, strive, and connive to make their ways in the world.

Sibling rivalries, tangled marital relationships, pleasure, pain, and regret are all grist for the mill in Nancy’s stories. They take you on a ride into the deep, unmined recesses of the heart anchored by everyday objects—a cup of coffee on a dashboard, a photograph, a newspaper. In Nancy’s compassionate, self-assured hands, ordinary moments become windows into the hidden longings of characters who could be our own neighbors, friends, or family members. What an accomplishment!
