Who among us could survive and thrive in pursuing the writing life without our friends—those dear ones who encourage and appreciate us, console and extol us? Those sweet souls can magically make us believe we are wonderful and still full of promise when we’re feeling low? In honor of those supportive soulmates, a gathering of wisdom:

“There is one friend in the life of each of us who seems not a separate person, however dear and beloved, but an expansion, an interpretation of one’s self, the very meaning of one’s soul.” Edith Wharton

“One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.” Euripides

“ Be slow to fall into friendships: but when thru art in, continue firm and constant.” Socrates

“Some people go to priests; others to poetry; I to my friends.” Virginia Woolf

“We’re not primarily on this earth to see through one another, but to see one another through.” Peter De Vries

“A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you’ve forgotten the words.” Donna Roberts
