Helping Others

“The greatest achievements are those that benefit others.”. Dennis Waitley

If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.” Margaret Fuller

Right now, I’m sitting in a little plaza near my home having a coffee and writing this blog—a little late, but I’m sure that’s OK.

Somewhere, hundreds of miles away in Tennessee, my friend Dr. Terrie Wurzbacher is on a heroic quest. She’s just begun a 10-day trek across the state. Within that 10-days she has to cover 314 miles. For her seventh year, she’s entered the Vol State competition and it’s rough.

Dr. Terrie is short, so her stride isn’t long. She’s contending with heat and bugs and trucks on major highways. But she’s determined to finish.

I just sent her a message this morning at 7:30 that said, “Every Step Fuels Your Pep!!!!” it’s a special mantra I dreamed up with for her.

She thanked me. Then I thanked her back for inspiring me. Her amazing determination and go-for-it! grit give me a boost!

This is a perfect example of what Dennis is talking about in his quote. Dr. Terrie’s achievements and her determination aren’t just about overcoming her own obstacles, they’re also benefiting others. She’s a shining example of someone who’s overcome adversity many times and shared the lessons she’s learned to help others. In fact, she’s even written a great book called, Punched in the Mouth: The Inner Game of Overcoming Adversity.

And now, let’s turn to our own writing. How can what we write benefit others—enliven, embolden, and encourage them?

There are so many ways!

Like Dr. Terrie, in our writing we can share life lessons that will help our readers travel their own paths more skillfully.

We can create stories that let our readers escape for a while and enter new worlds—worlds where anything can happen—and often does!

We can share knowledge that will help our readers live better, more healthful and fulfilling lives.

We can share examples of ordinary people doing extraordinary things to remind u=our readers that they too have unlimited inner resources.

We can create characters and stories that point the way to a more harmonious, joyful world for us all.

We have so much to give! Our words have wings! They overcome time and space. Let’s remember that one of the greatest gifts we possess as writers is the ability to benefit others. Bravo, Terrie! Write on!
